Based on Hubert Selby Jr.'s controversial novel, this drama is set among the Brooklyn world of the early 1950s, a place populated by prostitutes, junkies and thugs. This is a gallery of characters, including: a union strike leader discovers he is gay; a prostitute falls for one of her clients; a family is upset by the news that their daughter is illegitimately pregnant.
