In this cinematic adaption of Pat Conroy's autobiographical novel, Jon Voight stars as Pat Conroy, a teacher who takes a job at a small poor school located on the remote Daufuskie Island. There he finds impoverished, nearly illiterate African-American children and determines to help them by designing lessons that relate directly to their lives and finally piques their interest and earns their trust.
