Set in 19th-century Japan, this historical action drama stars Tom Cruise as Nathan Algren, a veteran of the U.S. Civil War who is hired by the Emperor Meiji to train an army capable of wiping out the Samurai. As he is captured during a battle, Algren finds himself unexpectedly impressed and influenced by his encounters with the Samurai, and questioning himself about who he should be fighting alongside.
